How to Play Chess: Learn the Rules and Steps

Chess is a game played by two players on a square board divided into 64 squares of alternating colors (white and black). Each player has 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to trap it so that it cannot escape from any attack.

To play chess, you need to follow these steps:

Step 1. How to Set Up the Chess Board and Pieces

At the beginning of the game, you need to set up the board and pieces correctly. The board should be placed so that each player has a white square on their right-hand corner. The pieces should be arranged as follows:

  • The second row (or rank) is filled with pawns.

  • The rooks go in the corners, then the knights next to them, followed by the bishops, and finally the queen, who always goes on her own matching color (white queen on white, black queen on black), and the king on the remaining square.

The diagram below shows how the board and pieces should look like:

Step 2. How to Move the Different Pieces and Capture the Opponent's Pieces

Each piece has its own way of moving on the board. You can move one piece per turn, except when you castle (see Step 3). You cannot move a piece to a square that is occupied by another piece of your own color. You can capture an opponent's piece by moving your piece to its square and removing it from the board.

Here is how each piece moves:

  • The king can move one square in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally). The king cannot move into check, which means that it cannot move to a square that is attacked by an opponent's piece.

  • The queen can move any number of squares. in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally). The queen is the most powerful piece on the board.

  • The rook can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically. The rook can also participate in a special move called castling (see Step 3).

  • The bishop can move any number of squares diagonally. Each bishop starts on one color of square and can only move on that color for the whole game.

  • The knight can move in an L-shape: two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally. The knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces.

  • The pawn can move one square forward, except on its first move, when it can move two squares forward. The pawn can only capture an opponent's piece diagonally, one square ahead and to the left or right. If a pawn reaches the last row (or rank) of the board, it can promote to any other piece of the same color, except the king.

The diagram below shows how each piece moves and captures:

Step 3. How to Check, Checkmate, and Win the Game

The main objective of chess is to checkmate the opponent's king. This means that you put the king in check (attack it with one of your pieces) and the king cannot escape from the check by any means (moving, capturing, or blocking).

If you put the king in check, you must say "check" to warn your opponent. If the king cannot get out of check, you must say "checkmate" and you win the game. If the king is not in check but cannot make any legal move, the game is a draw by stalemate.

There are other ways to win or draw the game, such as:

  • Castling: This is a special move that allows you to move your king and one of your rooks at the same time. You can only castle if neither the king nor the rook has moved before, if there are no pieces between them, and if the king is not in check or does not pass through a checked square. Castling can help you protect your king or activate your rook.

  • En passant: This is a special move that allows you to capture an opponent's pawn that has just moved two squares forward from its original position and landed next to your pawn. You can capture it as if it had moved only one square forward.

  • Pawn promotion: This is when your pawn reaches the last row of the board and you can change it to any other piece of your choice (except the king).

  • Resignation: This is when you decide to give up the game because you think you have no chance of winning or drawing.

  • Draw by agreement: This is when both players agree to end the game in a draw because neither side has a clear advantage or a way to win.

  • Draw by repetition: This is when the same position occurs three times in a row with the same player to move.

  • Draw by insufficient material: This is when neither player has enough pieces to checkmate the opponent's king.

  • Draw by 50-move rule: This is when no pawn has moved and no piece has been captured in the last 50 moves by each player.

The diagram below shows some examples of checkmate, stalemate, and special moves:

How to Improve Your Chess Skills: Tips and Tricks

Playing chess is not only fun but also beneficial for your brain. It can help you improve your memory, concentration, creativity, problem-solving, logical thinking, and more. However, chess is also a complex and challenging game that requires practice and study to master.

If you want to improve your chess skills, here are some tips and tricks that can help you:

Tip 1. Develop a Plan and Strategy for Each Game

Chess is not a game of random moves. You need to have a plan and a strategy for each game, based on the position of the pieces on the board, the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, and your goals and objectives.

A plan is a general idea of what you want to achieve in the game, such as controlling the center, attacking the enemy king, or defending your own king. A strategy is a specific way of executing your plan, such as opening with e4, castling early, or exchanging pieces.

To develop a good plan and strategy, you need to consider these factors:

The Tip 2. Use Tactics and Combinations to Gain an Advantage

Tactics are short-term moves that exploit a weakness or a mistake in the opponent's position. They can help you win material, checkmate, or gain a better position. Some common tactical motifs are forks, pins, skewers, double checks, discoveries, and sacrifices.

Combinations are sequences of moves that involve one or more tactics and lead to a clear advantage or a win. They usually require calculation and visualization skills to spot and execute them correctly.

To use tactics and combinations effectively, you need to practice them regularly and look for them in your games. You can u
